PROFORMANCE AND LEAN MANUFACTURING
In 1997, PROFormance Powertrain Products took the industry lead when it
began a long and successful initiative to implement Lean Manufacturing
in its production process. Lean Manufacturing is a discipline that
reduces unproductive costs by eliminating waste and improving quality
thereby providing the highest value to the customer. Over the past
several years, PROFormance has invested more than $5 million in Lean
Manufacturing improvements and the resulting efficiencies enable us
to consistently deliver the highest quality products at very competitive
prices.

The Engine Remanufacturing ProcessEach PROFormance Remanufactured Engine has every component and casting machined to exacting specifications 100% of the time regardless of its original condition and has all internal components replaced using new or remanufactured parts. How these components are remanufactured and assembled is a key determinate to the quality and durability of the finished engine. Our processes outlined below provide the finest quality remanufactured engines available today. ![]() State-of-the-Art Production PROFormance’s 240,000 square foot factory was designed specifically for engine remanufacturing. We operate to ISO 9001:2000 quality standards with processes that include CNC controlled operating equipment, on-going daily audit of sourced materials, an on-site laboratory for tooling calibration and sediment testing, daily finished product audits and a host of other rigorous measures taken to insure you receive the highest quality finished product. |
100% Complete Disassembly
Before the remanufacturing process begins, each engine is completely disassembled to its smallest component. Reusable parts such as cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, connecting rods and crankshafts are thermally or chemically cleaned prior to entering the machining process. Pistons, rings, bearings, timing and other wear parts are replaced with new.
100% Crack Detection
All component castings are wet Magnafluxed, a superior means of crack detection, to insure that only perfect castings are put into our production process.
100% Align Honed
All block castings are align honed. This provides the best surface finish for optimum bearing crush, heat transfer, oil clearance and gear train alignment.
100% Deck Surfaces Resurfaced
All cylinder blocks and cylinder heads are resurfaced. This provides the strongest possible head gasket seal. This machining operation is performed parallel to the crankshaft centerline which ensures equal compression.
100% Cylinder Reconditioning
All cylinders are bored 90 degrees to the crankshaft centerline. The cylinders are then Plateau Diamond Honed to achieve the proper cylinder size and surface finish. This assures the best compression and oil control.
100% Cylinder Head ReconditioningAll valve guides are reconditioned to better than OE specified tolerances. All cylinder head valve seats are 3-angle machined for optimum sealing and flow. High-temp Viton valve stem seals are used to provide superior sealing and oil control. Valve stem heights and lash are measured to specification to ensure optimum engine performance
100% Crankshafts RegroundAll crankshafts are reground to better-than-OE tolerances for clearance. Crankshafts are ground on stroke to assure equalized compression of cylinders for equalized power. Crankshafts are ground on index thereby providing balanced running mates and a smooth running engine.
100% Connecting Rod ReconditioningAll connecting rods are reconditioned to better than OE specified tolerances. Connecting rods are machined perpendicular to the housing bore which provides true journal alignment and minimal bearing stress. The rods are diamond honed to achieve proper size and surface finish. This supports the best heat transfer and allows for strict size control and optimum bearing crush for extended bearing life.
Assembly
Each remanufactured engine is assembled following our Quality Management System’s documented work instructions. This eliminates inconsistent quality that can occur by having technicians rely on their own experiences to assemble engines. PROFormance engines are assembled using a high percentage of new parts from OE suppliers such as Federal Mogul, Mahle/Clevite, Fel-Pro and others. Our process of remanufacturing parts to the strictest tolerances, using a high percentage of OE supplier parts and assembling under rigorous controls produces the highest quality remanufactured engines possible.
100% Functionally Tested
Before it leaves the factory, each PROFormance engine must pass multiple levels of rigorous testing. All complete engine assemblies are pressure tested to ensure that there are no leaks internally or externally within the cooling system which verifies that the cylinder heads, expansion plugs, and water passages are properly sealed. All units are 100% functionally tested for oil pressure, oil flow, and compression. Advanced testing includes live fire testing of fully assembled engines and their components and dynamometer testing under varied and extreme conditions.
Packaging and ShippingPROFormance ships our engines in durable, high impact plastic returnable shipping containers. These containers eliminate damage in shipping and make core returns significantly easier by providing a safe and convenient means of returning the core without spills of any residual core liquids. Our shipping department handles hundreds of engines in a single day enabling us to negotiate the best rates to ship anywhere in the United States.
By producing under ISO9001:2000 process management, to tolerances held closer than the original manufacturer, using improved components and manufactured in our state-of-the-art operations, PROFormance Powertrain Products is able to consistently deliver the highest quality remanufactured engines on the market today.
